Winter Car Care Tips for a Smooth Season

Simple steps to keep your vehicle protected through the cold months

As temperatures dip and winter settles in, your car needs a little extra attention—even while it’s safely stored away. Taking the time to prep and maintain your vehicle now can help you avoid costly repairs, leaks, or surprises come spring.

Start and exercise your car regularly.
Even in storage, your vehicle’s fluids and seals benefit from occasional movement. Starting your car and letting it run for a few minutes every few weeks helps keep the battery charged, the oil circulated, and seals from drying out or leaking. Think of it as a little “stretch” for your car’s mechanical systems.

Keep an eye on tire pressure.
Cold air causes tires to lose pressure faster, and sitting too long on underinflated tires can lead to flat spots. A quick check and top-off every so often will help them hold their shape and ensure a smoother ride when you’re ready to hit the road again.

Check your coolant and antifreeze.
It’s important that your cooling system is filled with the right mix of antifreeze—not plain water. Water can freeze in low temperatures, which can cause serious damage like cracked radiators or even engine blocks. A proper antifreeze blend keeps your system safe and your engine protected all season long.

Keep your battery on a tender.
Cold weather is tough on batteries, especially when cars sit unused for long periods. Using a battery tender or disconnecting the battery altogether will help prevent it from draining completely, saving you from the frustration (and cost) of a dead battery come spring.

With a little preventative care now, your car will stay in great condition all winter long—and be ready to fire right up when warmer weather returns.
