Pedal to the Metal: Muscle Cars

Classic, old-fashioned, American Muscle. It’s fast, loud, and on display this month! Before “performance” became a badge or a trim package, it was a challenge, and in the 1960s, American automakers answered it with horsepower.

By the mid 1960s, automakers such as Ford, Pontiac, and Chevrolet were in full competition for dominance on the street and at the strip. At the peak of the Muscle Car era in 1970, cars like the 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 and the 1970 Buick Gran Sport delivered serious performance straight off the showroom floor, no modifications required. These early muscle cars were designed to grab the attention of young buyers fueled by enthusiasm. Each car tells a story of speed, competition, and craftsmanship.

The 1970 Chevelle and Buick Grand Sport will be on display at the museum along with other iconic high-performance vehicles of the golden age of horsepower! From the rumble of the V8 engines to the aggressive styling that defined a generation, the cultural impact these machines left is undeniable.

Whether you’re a lifelong enthusiast or simply curious, this month’s Pedal to the Metal: Muscle Cars exhibit offers a dynamic, up-close look at the cars that continue to define performance.

Next month: Get a glimpse inside Kansas City’s once bustling Leeds Assembly Plant. From locally produced cars to former workers’ cherished memorabilia, you won’t want to miss it.
