From the Curator: Military Vehicles – From Forts to Front Lines

This July marks the 250th anniversary of American Independence! That is no small feat. In recognition of our nation’s history of dedicated service men and women, the museum is displaying a variety of military vehicles. All active duty and retired veterans will receive free admission in July as our way to say thank you.

Over the past 100 years, companies like Ford and Cadillac have supported the US government by building specialized vehicles or supplying crucial parts for the war effort. Perhaps the most recognizable is the Willys Jeep. Used primarily during World War II and the Korean War, these standard all-terrain vehicles could be easily outfitted with extra supplies and weaponry to support a wide variety of needs and environments. Military Jeeps are still produced today in addition to modern civilian Jeeps. They mirror the original Willys design, but instead feature domestic creature comforts (and maybe a few rubber ducks).

From transport trucks to ambulances and specialized support vehicles, each one was designed to help people meet the challenges of its time. Each vehicle shares the story of courage, perseverance, and unique circumstances. Every detail represents the places we’ve been and the rapidly advancing technology that got us there.

Whether you’re a lifelong Kansas City resident or visiting from out of town, these are vehicles you won’t find on the street. Make sure to visit the KC Auto Museum to see this rare display before it’s gone!
