The Olathe Leadership Lowrider Bike Club is a student-led program that blends craftsmanship, cultural expression, and mentorship through the art of building custom lowrider bicycles. Based in Olathe, Kansas, the club provides high school students with hands-on experience in fabrication, painting, and design, while also fostering leadership skills, teamwork, and personal growth.
In 2025, the club was selected to participate in the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington, D.C., where students demonstrated their skills to a national audience. During the festival, they built a custom lowrider bicycle live on-site, engaging visitors through interactive demonstrations and conversations about their work and the culture behind it. The completed bike was ultimately donated to the Smithsonian, marking a significant achievement for the group. Through this experience, students not only showcased their craftsmanship but also helped challenge misconceptions about lowrider culture while representing youth leadership on a national stage. They are excited to bring a similar interactive and educational exhibit to the Kansas City Automotive Museum’s Great Car Show on April 19th.
Students from the club will participate in a panel discussion during the Great Car Show, where they will share their personal experiences in the program and discuss the impact it has had on their skills, confidence, and future goals. They will also provide an overview of their booth activities, giving attendees insight into the techniques, tools, and creative processes they will be demonstrating throughout the day.
