From the Curator: Oddballs

Oddballs

This month at KCAM, we’re celebrating the weird, the wonderful, and the wildly unforgettable — the oddball cars that turned heads, sparked conversations, and dared to be different.

Not every car is built to blend in. Some are designed with bold curves, unusual proportions, or ahead-of-their-time ideas that challenge what a vehicle should look like. These are the cars that make people do a double-take at stoplights, that show up at car shows with stories to tell, and that often inspire either puzzled looks or total devotion.

In the world of car collecting, oddball vehicles have carved out a space all their own. They may not have the fame of a Mustang or the roar of a GTO, but they have something just as important: personality. Whether it’s a quirky city cruiser, a fiberglass fever dream, or a retro-futuristic concept brought to life, oddball cars reflect the creativity and risk-taking spirit that fuels this hobby.

For many collectors, it’s not just about horsepower or pedigree, it’s about owning something unique. A car that tells a story. A design that broke the mold. A piece of automotive history that didn’t follow the rules, and is all the more beloved because of it.

This month’s Drive-In Exhibit features a selection of these one-of-a-kind cars — fun, funky, and full of character. Whether you’re here to admire the curves, scratch your head, or smile at the daring designs, you’ll leave with a deeper appreciation for the boldness that drives this hobby.

Coming next month: We’ll shift from the strange to the scenic with a spotlight on RVs and road-tripping culture, celebrating the vehicles that made it possible to take the comforts of home on the open road.

Until next month,
Butch Papon
